May 21 meeting: I found a quilted heart

The program for this month will be I Found a Quilted Heart.
This is an international program which began in 2014.

The idea of the program is for people to create quilted hearts and place them in public places for random strangers to find to brighten
their day. The founders desired to keep the program simple, anonymous, random, and neutral with no hidden agenda.
I will have handouts of the printed tags which are placed on the hearts. There will be instructions on where the hearts may and may
not be placed.

April 2023 – Kena Tangi Dorsey

Join us Sunday, April 16, when our guest is Kena Tangi Dorsey, presenting: “The Big, The Bold, The Beautiful: Quilting with African Fabrics”

Kena is a quilt artist, teacher and the owner of Kena Quilt Studio. We have a special time set aside for her presentation and class:

10:00 am  meeting

10:30 am  Kena’s lecture (60 to 75 minutes)

11:30 am  break for lunch

1:00 – 4:00 pm  workshop

Born in Pittsburgh, she moved to New York City where she spent 18 years prior to relocating to Los Angeles. During her time in New York City she was influenced by many of the Harlem Renaissance artists and quickly became intrigued with portrait quilts. She began making raw edge applique story and art quilts using images that reflect African American people. Kena infuses African wax prints, kente cloth and mud cloth textiles into her quilting projects and also loves working with Indonesian batiks.

When not designing and making quilts, Kena teaches filmmaking and television production to high school students and is an adjunct professor at a local college where she teaches cinema and multi camera television studio production courses

Kena will teach a beginner-friendly class that uses her “Iyanla” pattern to teach a fun and easy method of raw edge appliqué, all while using African print fabrics! The pattern, which is designed by the instructor, is included with the course. Optional Kits are available from the instructor for $45.00, or you can use fabrics from your own stash. (Skill Level: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advance Quilters)

Becky Rogers – Post February Meeting

Thank you to Becky Rogers, Los Osos, CA, for sharing how Bear Valley Quilters got its start. She explained how there was a need for a guild in our ‘little’ town. What vision the organizers had!

With over 45 years experience, she shared her personal history of teaching in our area. There are a lot of quilters who got their start in one of her classes AND she remembers pre-Rotary cutter days.

Her journey to become an AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser was truly a labor of love for quilts and quilting. Have you had a quilt appraised? Have you lost a quilt BEFORE it was appraised? Every quilt has value.

Are you documenting your own quilts by attaching a label? Minimum information: name and year.

We had three members joining us via Zoom.

February Meeting – Becky Rogers

Join us February 19 when Becky Rogers will be our speaker. Becky is an AQS certified quilt appraser and has taught quilting locally for 40 years.

Becky is a founding member of Bear Valley Quilters and will share information on how we got started.
