September 15 – Arlene Velis

Lecture only. Color Confidence for Quilters.

Arlene Velis is an artist and instructor based in California. She was born and raised in Southern California where she grew up visiting local art galleries, museums and libraries which inspired her love of art. She received her MA in Fine Arts from California State University Northridge.

Arlene is inspired by nature and texture. She enjoys quilting, embroidery, painting, and ceramics to name a few. In her free time she enjoys sewing her own clothes, gardening and cooking. She currently works as an Adjunct Professor and presents to quilting guilds. Arlene is certified to teach both Scrappy Applique and Color Confidence for Quilters.

August 18 – Jenny Lyon

Jenny is a fiber artist, author and teacher. Her work focuses on free motion quilting on whole cloth and has juried into international quilt shows, art shows and galleries. Jenny teaches and lectures on free motion quilting wherever she is invited. She claims the title “Encourager-in-Chief” as she believes that every quilter has the skills to free motion quilt some of their own work. She lives in northern California with her husband and Australian Shepherdess. Her boys have left the nest and she now has a fine 2-room studio.

Jenny will present her lecture “My Tippy Top Tips for Successful and Joyful Free Motion Quilting”.

Whimsical Garden: My most popular workshop, this pattern uses two techniques — regular piecing to make the background and raw edge appliqué to make the foreground. What’s fun about these quilts is they all come out differently, based on what students bring to class.

Quilting Day

World Wide Quilting Day, International Quilting Day, National Quilting Day. Three names for the same day/event. It’s all about celebrating the world of quilting. March 16, 2024.

Past-President Sue dropped off 2 quilts to Sierra Vista Hospital to be given to two babies. We were a little late in getting them delivered in time for World Wide Quilting Day, but the babies won’t care!

What did you do to celebrate?

March Program Sunday, March 17.

Our program for this month will be Allie McCathren presenting her Seaglass Workshop. Allie is an artist with a background in marine biology. She lives in Houston, TX with her three sons. Her love of science and nature tends to find its way into her work, whether she intends it or not.


Allie works primarily with fabric and thread, but is also a painter, working with acrylics and watercolors. She uses fabric as if it were paint, working with color arrangement and texture to create her art quilts. She is a modern quilter who uses a lot of improv techniques in her work. She loves working with scraps of fabrics that one may not think work together. It can be difficult to figure out how to use scraps efficiently, especially if they don’t seem to “work” together.

Alliee will guide you through her process of organization and usage of scraps so that you may learn to look at fabric in a new way.

This is a 5 hour workshop. Therefore, we will move the starting time for our meeting to 11:00 a.m. Sunday, March 17.

March Sit and Sew

There’s a lot of activity during our monthly Sit and Sew. Join us the 2nd Friday of each month. 9 am – 3 pm. SBCC, 2180 Palisades Avenue, Los Osos, CA. Some of us save hand work to bring just so we don’t have to cart our machines from home.

Who doesn’t want to sew on stage? AND get help from your friends.
It’s a fact. When you work on a project, you make progress on a project. Amazing, huh!?

Each month there is a demo of some sort. Rik is showing how to put together a fabric card holder. Great for traveling or hiking.
Kimber is showing off her Bear Hugs quilt. Both the girl and the quilt are adorable!
No one is cracking a whip, but a lot gets done.
